doctor checking patient for dental fillings

Dental fillings are a common procedure used to treat cavities or tooth decay. There are several types of dental fillings, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

In our practice, we mainly use composite fillings and indirect restorations like ceramics due to their strength and durability.

1- Composite Fillings:

Composite fillings, also known as white or tooth-coloured fillings, are made from a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles. They have become increasingly popular due to their aesthetic appeal, as they can be closely matched to the colour of your existing teeth.

This type of filling bonds directly to the tooth, providing further support to the tooth structure. It is ideal for small to medium-sized fillings, particularly in parts of the mouth that need to withstand moderate pressure from the constant stress of chewing.

However, composite fillings may not be as durable as other types of fillings when used for large cavities. They may also take longer to place than other fillings due to the techniques required.

2- Indirect Restorations: Ceramics

Ceramic fillings, also known as inlays or onlays, are a type of indirect restoration. These fillings are custom-made in a dental laboratory and then bonded to the tooth. They can be matched to the colour of your tooth, and are resistant to staining.

Ceramics are generally more durable and longer lasting than composite fillings. They are particularly beneficial for larger cavities or for teeth that need a significant amount of structure replaced. The process of getting ceramic fillings may require more than one dental visit, but the result is a natural-looking, strong, and durable restoration.

It’s important to note that not every type of filling is suitable for everyone. The best type of filling for you will depend on factors such as the extent of the repair needed, where in your mouth the filling is required, and any allergies you may have.

Your dentist will be able to discuss the best options for your individual needs. Remember, the key to reducing the need for fillings is maintaining good oral hygiene – brushing and flossing daily and scheduling regular check-ups with your dentist.

Amalgam Fillings and Why They Are Less Common Now

Amalgam fillings, often referred to as silver fillings, are made from a mixture of metals including silver, mercury, tin, and copper. They have been used in dentistry for over a century and are known for their durability and longevity.

However, in recent years, their use has declined for several reasons. Firstly, amalgam fillings are not tooth-coloured and are therefore more noticeable than composite or ceramic fillings, which can be a disadvantage for fillings in visible areas of the mouth.

Additionally, concerns have been raised about the environmental impact of dental amalgam, as mercury is a component. Although the amount of mercury released in the mouth under normal use is very low, it is more about the environmental burden caused by the disposal of amalgam fillings and the health risks to dental personnel.

For these reasons, many dental practices, including ours, have moved away from using amalgam fillings in favour of more aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly options like composite and ceramic fillings.
